History                    

Monarchy is the oldest institution of British Govt., working since Roman times. A total of 53 Monarchs out of which 5 women ruled U.K. During 1649-1660 (11 years) England was without monarchy.
Queen Elizabeth-II, came to thrown on Feb. 8, 1952, at the age of 25.

succession

The title to the crown is derived partly from statutes and partly from common law.
Son of monarch have precedence over daughter in succeeding to the throne.  When a daughter succeeds to the throne she becomes Queen Regnant. The constitutions doesn’t give any special powers or privileges to her husband.

sources of the power

The powers of the monarch have been derived from (1) Royal Prerogatives (2) Statutes
Royal prerogatives means the powers which have been left with the monarch deliberately.

He/She summon and prorogue the parliament session.
Can dissolve the parliament
Assent a bill
1st maiden speech
Initiate bill on any subject
Issue ordinance

executive

Appointment and removal of high officials
Supreme Commander of all armed forces
To declare war and peace
Receive and send diplomats

judicial

Fountain of justice and honor. Give honors and titles to persons, like Knighthood,

Appoint and remove judges
Give pardon, short the sentence, can declare general amnesty.

Defender of faith
Appoint Bishop, Arch Bishop

Symbol of common wealth unity
